Marc Lottering is often considered as one of the most beloved South African comics of his time. In the Bloemhof Girls’ High School auditorium, Lottering had the audience in stitches performing his latest special, which he has been touring across the country for the past six months. So much so, that it even garnered a standing ovation from the auditorium following the performance.

The show’s premise is simple enough and tells the story of how Lottering injured his ankle on a wild night out and found himself on stage in a moonboot for the first time. Hence, the show’s aptly named title, Ankle Marc.

Woven in between are some seriously funny stories about love, loss and the South African experience, told in a charming and relatable manner that will have you cracking up from start to finish.

Lottering is animated as ever, proving to have not lost a single step, despite having been in the industry for nearly three decades. His delivery is sharp and witty, appealing to a wide variety of audiences across different races and cultural backgrounds.

Given that Lottering has always been known for his character work, what sets this production apart is the deeply personal and intimate look he gives the audience into his own life.

What you get from start to finish is an unapologetic, authentic version of the man himself. This allows audiences to relate to him on a deeper level, not through popular characters like Aunty Merle or Smiley, but rather through someone who seems to share the same experiences one does on a daily basis.

From a technical standpoint, the show manages to strike a perfect balance between showcasing Lottering as the centre of attention, while not being visually uninteresting. Naturally, Lottering remains the main focus, while the lighting keeps the audience engaged with changing colours and patterns as the show and Lottering’s storytelling unfolds.

All in all, Ankle Marc proves to be another highlight in the already illustrious career of the veteran comedian, managing to tell stories that all South Africans can resonate with as he attempts to connect intimately with audiences through his comedy.
