Woordfees: Alan Committie – Master of funny

Tears of joy were shed as the audience erupted into uncontrollable laughter at Alan Committie’s performance of excerpts of his show Love Factually at the 2023 Toyota SU Woordfees.

Committie performed in the Teatertent at Stellenbosch University’s Wilgenhof residence’s tennis courts on 9 and 10 October.

An engaged audience

Committie’s comedic bravado saw his viewers – a mix of both young and old – fall into a state of near constant laughter.

The venue was three quarters full, as SMF News observed audiences captivated by Committie’s comparisons between well-known romantic comedies and the harsh reality of the modern dating experience.

By engaging with audience members, the show instilled in its viewers a sense of comfort and familiarity.

Almost brash in style, Committie’s honest insight into couple life, the differences between men and women and the eccentricities and fragilities of relationship and marriage, provided viewers with useful tips packaged with a comedic twist.

Audiences roared in delight each time the comedian remarked: “Stuff you, I’m enjoying myself”.

A master at work

The ability to work the audience into his performance with rib-tickling questions that provoked hysterical answers, coupled with quick-fix responses truly highlighted Committie’s spontaneous, yet witty nature.

Committie referenced romantic favourites ranging from Fifty Shades of Grey to Mamma Mia in an attempt to shed new light on the intricacies and complications of modern love in the era of internet dating.

This prompted viewers to see the films not as a reflection of their own lives, but as the fictional aspiration of what their experiences of love could be.

Setting the mood

Although no profanity was used, Committie’s well-disguised innuendos sparked much fun within his audience.

His performance was lively, both in body language and in spirit.

Minimal white and blue lighting complimented the setup, and dimming lights followed him across the stage as he launched his next joke.

After a delightful performance of Pierce Brosnan’s rendition of ABBA’s timeless classic SOS, the audience departed with smiles adorning their faces.
