Who lives and who dies – Game of Thrones episode 3

It’s come – the big battle we’ve all been waiting for! Asses were kicked, people died, but more people almost died, and major spoilers are ahead.

Firstly, let’s have a moment of silence for all those that passed away – Lyanna and Jorah Mormont, last of their noble house; Theon Greyjoy, a redeemed man; Edd, a good friend to the end; and Beric, finally allowed to rest eternally.

A special shout-out to Lyanna for dying in the most Lyanna way, killing a giant.

I’m also really glad for Jorah that he could at least die while protecting Dany.

“Get you a man like Jorah Mormont,” says Ntsika Mbebe (22), a final year engineering student.

The most important moment of the show was definitely when Arya fooled the Night King with her nifty knife tricks and by disguising herself as a whole White Walker. The cheers in Pulp Cinema showed everyone’s relief and pride in Arya’s accomplishment. What an icon, showing that women can be both bloodthirsty and thirsty.

This episode was evidently sponsored by Eskom because I could see jack. It even made me excited to see Melisandre because you know she always brings the flames. I felt sadder about her death than I expected to and yet was, honestly, mostly relieved to not see her in her old naked form again.

I still haven’t forgiven her, but you have to admit that the Dothraki going into battle with flaming swords is the best thing. Even if only because you can a) kind of see for a bit and b) see the flames devastatingly die out as they enter the horde.

Vuyokazi Hlwatika (21), a final year BA Social Dynamics student, says that her favourite moment “was the Red Priestess’ prophecies, especially about Arya shutting three sets of eyes forever. The Night King was blue-eyes & I believe Cersei is the green-eyed one. I’m looking forward to watching that unfold as well as seeing what her killing the NK [Night King] means regarding the Prince that was Promised”.

There was some tense dragon flying and fighting, with only Viserion dying. Hopefully this means that Drogon and Rhaegal will pull their weight in the fight against Cersei and her non-elephant army. And Ghost luckily lives! I think we can all agree that this good boy deserves a break from the battlefield.

A very intense moment that had the audience on the edge of their seats was the Night King applying some SPF5000 or something because the heat of dragon fire never bothered him anyway. Also, the fact that Dany was not moving out of the way nearly fast enough right after her attack on him.

One of the most epic moments was the Night King resurrecting a whole lot of the dead and creating an Aryan wet dream, with Jon tiptoeing through the corpses and eventually fighting them.

There seems to be a lot of contention about the amount of deaths for this episode.

Mbebe exclaimed: “What, these f*ckers are alive?” He says that he does not have much hope for the rest of the season.

Mohammed Parker (22), an engineering student, seems to disagree, listing some of his favourite moments as “the classic Arya stabbing the Night King with the pointy end. Also, when most of my favourite characters survived.”

He adds that he is looking forward to seeing what Jon and Dany will do next “since they haven’t had a chance to talk about Jon being her nephew.”

We can all sleep well until the next episode, during which we must remember that “Valar Morghulis”.
