The multicultural performance by popular South African band, Mi Casa, was the closing act for the Stellenbosch University centenary concert at Woordfees on Friday night.
Mi Casa’s signature blend of jazz and deep house was mixed with rap, followed by an auto tune set performed by Dr. Duda, their producer.
J Something, Mi Casa’s vocalist, sang and rapped in English, Portuguese and Zulu while Mo-T, the band’s trumpeter, taught the audience how to dance like both “a white boy” and “a black man”.
Carli du Toit (21), a speech therapy student and Sarah Wigmore (26), teacher, expressed that they deeply enjoyed the diversity of the performance from Mi Casa which united people from different backgrounds.
“It was awesome. I enjoyed myself. It was very fun,” said Kilebukile Kirby (26), social worker for child welfare.
During an interview, Mi Casa said that they were excited to be at Woordfees for the first time and to be performing for a different crowd than they’re used to. They also felt that the rehearsals on Thursday had given them the confidence to expect a great performance with the orchestra and the choir.
Tshepo Mosarwe (19), a trumpeter in the Stellenbosch University Jazz Band, said that both Mi Casa’s introduction of the choir, and Mi Casa’s own performance later that evening went well.
The crowd was pleasantly surprised when Mi Casa’s J Something talked about being a Stellenbosch alumnus. He encouraged current Stellenbosch university students to continue to dream without limitations.
