Stellenbosch-based Afrikaans band drops new lead single

The Stellenbosch-based band, Kontras released their new lead single for their upcoming album on 21 August.

“Die Ruimtevaarder” is the lead single for their upcoming album, Vir Konteks, which will be released on 11 September, said Daniël Botha, drummer of Kontras.

“[Die Ruimtevaarder] translates to ‘The Astronaut’ and it symbolises how often life can throw us out of our element. The astronaut then takes an untethered spacewalk, accepting the journey,” said Jacques Groenewald, lead vocalist of Kontras.

In essence, “Die Ruimtevaarder”, as a song, helps build the bridge between the vast differences in the makeup of our fanbase, he said.

Kontras’ mission for this song is to show people that it’s okay to not be okay, said Botha.

“We hope to build up some hype [for the album] through this song,” said Botha.

The response from fans for the new song has been phenomenal, said Arnold van der Walt, band manager.

“Massive blogs, radio stations and festivals have started to take notice. What once was a small Stellenbosch band playing to their friends, is fast growing into a massive family in music,” said Van der Walt.

The band has also received support from other artists in the media industry, said Groenewald.

“As we found our fan base, we have been met with unbelievable enthusiasm and support, not only from [the] fans but also other people in the music industry,” he said.
