More than 450 gather for Maties Colour Run

More than 450 people, including around 150 children, recently took part in a Colour Run hosted by Maties Sport.

This is according to Andiswa Zwelibanzi, sports manager of the Recreation and Lifestyle Unit (RALU) of Maties Sport.

The run took place on 15 October at Coetzenburg on a 5km route, said Zwelibanzi.

Good fun for a good cause

The run was a combined effort between RALU and two Stellenbosch University (SU) private student organisations (PSO), Capri and Aristea, said Zwelibanzi. The event was dedicated to two causes – mental health and breast cancer awareness, she said.

As October is annually celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the organisations wanted to raise awareness of the illness amongst students, she explained. “We just wanted to create awareness and have fun.”

Other organisations involved in the event were the Stellenbosch Women Alumnae Network and Boland Athletics.

Involving the youth

The children who attended the run were from four rural primary schools in Stellenbosch, said Rynhard Jonkerman, a representative of Boland Athletics.

Boland Athletics invited the children to participate in the event, said RJ Francke, a teacher at JJ Rhode Primary School, one of the schools that was invited to attend.

The other schools that attended the event were Rietenbosch Primary School, Pieter Langeveld Primary and Cloetesville Primary School, said Zwelibanzi via written correspondence with MatieMedia

Francke told MatieMedia that events like this Colour Run help the children to get out of their own environments and have new experiences. “The kids love excursions,” he added.

‘A lot of fun’

“It was a lot of fun,” said Alvino Hartley, who took part in the Colour Run. He told MatieMedia that he attended the event with some of his colleagues in support of one of their peers who is suffering from breast cancer.

“I’m very much a supporter of mental health awareness, as well as cancer awareness, which is why I decided to partake today,” he said.

Prizes

The entry fee to the event was R30, according to the event’s advertisement

Attendees could submit their proof of payment to be entered into a lucky draw, according to JR Esterhuizen, who is in charge of sales and marketing for Maties Gymnasium. The prize is a three-month membership to Maties Gymnasium and the winner will be announced this coming week, he said.

Maties Sport recently hosted a Colour Run with the aim of raising awareness about mental health and breast cancer. “We wanted to do something different and, at the same time, wanted to dedicate it to a good cause,” said Andiswa Zwelibanzi, sports manager of the Recreation and Lifestyle Unit of Maties Sport.
