The latest league one table results were published on 23 September, and showed Metanoia in third place on the residence hockey log and Equité at eleventh.

Currently, the Medies first team is at the top of the log with Serruria in second place.

The first goal in this match came in the first quarter by Metanoia’s Unathi Cele opening the scoring in the eighth minute.

Metanoia led 2-0 at halftime.

Metanoia capitalised on their attacking play to score another three goals in the second half.

Residence hockey games are not only about keeping fit. They are social events that allow players to get to know other people. This is according to Tiné Els, captain of the Equité private student organisation hockey team. “All throughout high school I played hockey and then I just saw that this [residence hockey] would be a great way to meet new people with the same interests,” said Jenna Ketringham, a first-year BA student, who played for Equité in a recent match against Metanoia residence. ‘Much improvement’

“It was very fun [and] we played very well,” said Adams, who is the sports and cluster head of Metanoia for 2022 and 2023. “We matched our passes very well.”

“We have had quite good results [in the league],” she added.

Adams said that this game was a definite improvement from Metanoia’s previous residence hockey games this year.

The Metanoia team has had good results this season, according to Layla Adams, captain of the Metanoia Residence hockey team . “We are currently sitting third in our pool right now, so that’s [a] very good [position] compared to previous years,” said Adams. Metanoia’s next game will be played against Sonop on 29 September at 20:00. Pictured here is Unathi Cele who played for the Metanoia hockey team on 27 September. PHOTO: Na’ilah Ebrahim

Despite the loss, the match was a good game for Equité, said Tiné Els, captain of the Equité hockey team.

“For a [private student organisation], it is very hard to practice together and to know each other’s styles [of play], so we really struggle with that,” she told MatieMedia.

“But we saw much improvement from the first game we played this year.”

Having fun with residence hockey

Marlé Labuschagne, a third-year BA student who played for Equité, said that this was her first time playing hockey in seven to eight years.

“I had a back injury [which prevented me from playing], so it’s a privilege to play now,” said Labuschagne.

“I know a lot of the girls enjoy it […] because it is not as intense as Maties Hockey,” said Adams. “It’s a nice time to just play your game as you want to play it.”

Equité views the residence hockey games as a social event to get to know everyone on the team and to stay fit, said Els.
