Investigation ongoing following recent robbery, shooting at local club

A case for business robbery and attempted murder was opened following a shooting incident at a club in Stellenbosch on 9 September. One person was injured during the incident.

This was according to captain Nathalie Martin, spokesperson for the South African Police Service Stellenbosch.

The incident took place at around 22:30 on 9 September at the Van der Stel (VDS) Club in Stellenbosch, said Martin.

The club is situated on the VDS sports complex grounds and is privately leased from the VDS council, which operates the facility, explained Pieter Lotz, chairperson of the VDS executive committee.

Cash grab

Eight suspects initially attempted to gain entrance to the club but were denied access, as an entry fee was required, said Martin.

The suspects then left, and “after a while, two came back, grabbed the cash box and ran out”, stated Martin.

As the suspects were leaving, the co-owner of the bar walked up the stairs to the bar, and one suspect fired a shot at him, according to Martin.

The victim was taken to hospital for medical attention. He is currently in a critical but stable condition, according to a statement released by his family on 12 September.

The victim was admitted to a private hospital near Stellenbosch on 9 September, according to an official from the hospital.

The owners of the bar are “saddened by the events”, and were set to meet on 11 September to “further discuss and unpack the incident”, said Lotz. A formal statement would be released after the meeting, said Lotz.

No arrests have been made and the case is under investigation, stated Martin.

The bar has never experienced an incident of this nature before, and will be closed during the course of the investigation, said Lotz.
