Woordfees: As far Down South as it gets

Music: Jeremy Loops

Jan Marais Park

The Jeremy Loops concert at the Jan Marais Park attracted parents, children, teenagers and students alike. Loops got the crowd jiving and entertained with his loop pedal, and was laden with a harmonica.

The show was opened by an angelic performance by Tessi Nandi, while the audience gathered picnic-style on the grass. The arrival of Loops and his team was met with excitement from the crowd and an electric energy.

Loops performed some of his crowd favourites: Down South, Sinner, Waves and Mortal Man, with classics from Tina Turner and Bruce Springsteen in the mix. Joined by a saxophonist, drummer, bass player and rapper, Loops engaged the crowd by getting them to sing loudly, and bringing them into the performance itself with his loop pedal.

He spoke to the crowd about his love of performing in Stellenbosch, his days grappling with his financial maths module at university, and his recent tours around the world. Down South got a particularly large reception from the crowd, as Loops gave a “taste” to the audience, before performing the full song towards the end of the show.

When Loops closed the concert, much to the crowd’s discontentment, he and his band were easily convinced to make a second appearance. See, I wrote it for you, was a fitting encore to such an uplifting performance

The performance – and the diversity of the crowd – showed how Loops music connects different South Africans from all ages. He ended the show with an appeal to the Woordfees team to have him back, “same time, same place” next year.
