Stellenbosch FC and Orlando Pirates share the spoils at Danie Craven

Stellenbosch Football Club (FC) drew 1-1 against Orlando Pirates in their recent match at the Danie Craven Stadium. This was their second draw in as many matches this season.

The DSTV Premiership fixture between Stellenbosch FC and Orlando Pirates took place on 10 August.

Pirates went up 1-0 after defender Nkosinathi Sibisi scored before halftime in the 45th minute.

Junior Mendieta, a Stellenbosch midfielder, equalised for the team in the 54th minute when his header found the back of Pirates’ net. He was subsequently penalised and received a yellow card for taking off his jersey during the celebration.

Mendieta’s goal was Stellenbosch’s first of the season, as the team drew 0-0 in an away match against Marumo Gallants in their season opener on 6 August.

Goals against the run of play

Although Pirates went into the halftime break with the lead, Stellenbosch were the better side, claimed José Riveiro, manager of Orlando Pirates.

“The fact is that they were much better than us in the first period,” said Riveiro in the post-match media scrum. “We went [into] halftime with an advantage and we did not deserve that advantage at all.”

Pirates improved in the second half, said Riveiro, adding that Stellenbosch’s equaliser came during Pirates’ “best moment in the game”.

“I think the result is fair,” said Riveiro. “I think both teams today deserve to get something.”

“We were very surprised [by] Stellenbosch’s rhythm in the first minutes,” said José Riveiro, manager of Orlando Pirates, following his team’s 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch Football Club. PHOTO: Tim Malinzi

A tough result for Stellenbosch

Steve Barker, manager of Stellenbosch FC, however considered the final outcome a “bad result” for his side, he stated.

“[Pirates] had their moments,” said Barker during the post-match media scrum. “But, overall, I felt like we possibly could have gotten a victory over Pirates this evening. I thought we had done everything that we had planned to do.”

“[In the] first half, I think we were on top of them,” said Mogamad de Goede, Stellenbosch FC captain. “We created more chances than them. I think we did well, we just couldn’t finish.”
