The FNB Maties Rugby club have been forced to shift their focus, following the cancelation of various competitions, including the University Sports South Africa (USSA)’s, Varsity Cup, and the Sevens competition. The rugby club now explores various options to compensate for this year’s lost season.

This was according to Quintin van Rooyen, senior sports manager of FNB Maties. As it stands, the club is investing this time to recruit smarter, raise funds better, and improve professional communication, said Van Rooyen.

“This period has allowed us the opportunity to measure where we stand as a club, bringing in improvements where necessary. It ensures a positive effect with our on-field performances,” said Van Rooyen.

The administrative department plays an important role in supporting the FNB Maties Club, according to Van Rooyen. By getting administrations up to date and looking at opportunities the club will improve daily operations, he said.

In terms of on-field plans, at the time of the writing, head coach of FNB Maties rugby, Drikus Hancke was still unsure as to when FNB Maties would resume with training on campus.

“We’ve done our scenario planning in terms of how we are going to integrate training back on campus. However, this is dependent on what Stellenbosch University (SU) says,” said Hancke.

Captain of FNB Maties, Ben-Jason Dixon, expressed the team’s disappointment after the season was cut short due to the current Covid-19 pandemic.

“We were building some good momentum after our first few matches. It’s unfortunate that the season had to come to an end,” said Dixon.

“Moving forward, we just aim to encourage each other for the remainder of this lockdown. As for the rest of this year, it’s just a period of building up excitement and getting back on the field,” added Dixon.

Player’s saying their goodbyes

According to Hancke, a couple of players leaving Maties inevitably calls for a few on-field adjustments in the future.

“We’ve got a few players who were playing their final year. Some are leaving for work, while others continue with their rugby careers after being offered professional contracts. We wish all of them well, whichever direction they go,” added Hancke.

Players leaving FNB Maties include Jake Blew, Reinhardt Fortuin, and HJ Luus.

“As for the current now, we are working on the student-athletes meeting their academic requirements in order for them to play.
