Chalk Talk: A look at the Anti-GBV movement at SU

According to Moneyweb South Africa: “The number of reported rapes rose by 3.9%, to 41 583 in the year through March, the highest in four years.”

Every 3 hours a woman is murdered.

After the death of 19-year old UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana, enough was really enough. Her brutal death catalysed a movement that spread to universities all over the country.

This movement led to 1000’s of men and women gathering outside parliament during the #AmINext demonstration on Thursday 5 September. All in agreement of one thing: to end gender-based violence.

In this episode of Chalk Talk, MatieMedia sits down with several of the women behind the Anti-Gender Based violence movement at Stellenbosch University and talked manifestos, rhetoric and the way forward.
